Welcome to the Tucson Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). The Tucson Chapter is an organization of over 300 members who represent all branches of service and a large auxiliary unit of military wives. The chapter is very active in the local community. Each year we have eight general membership meetings at different locations around Tucson. You can find the locations and the programs here on the web site. In addition to our general membership meetings, the chapter also participates in Memorial Day services around the city, the Veteran’s Day Parade, the First Sergeant’s Food locker at Davis Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB), Christmas gifts for children of deployed parents at DM, and we volunteer or services to the VA Regional Medical Center. Each year we award scholarships to local high school seniors who have a parent or parents who are active duty or retired military, regardless of rank. Thi s year we are proud to have awarded 6 scholarships. The names are listed on the scholarship page. We also recognize distinguished students at the three ROTC units at the UA and the four JROTC units at local high schools. See the ROTC/JROTC page to learn more. One other program that we do as a chapter is our Adopt a Unit program. We have local units that have deployed so we gather necessity and nice to have items that we deliver to the units stay behind forces to get delivered to the units in their forward deployed bases. This continues to be a big hit for our deployed troops. Once again, welcome to the site, look around and let us know what you think.

After you read the President’s message, you will find important notices. Please look just below for these notices.

PRESIDENT’S NOTES

I am very happy to be back onboard as President of the Tucson Chapter, Military Officers Association of America. I held this position some years back but had to step down when my wife Marilyn became very ill. It was in part in memory of Marilyn and the good life we shared for so many years, and the great military friends we had, that I accepted the Board of Directors’ call to serve once again. I thank them for their confidence and support.

Why now and why me? The answer is this, earlier this year our President at that time had to step down. In looking over possible successors, it was determined that our Secretary Pat Shecter would fill the position, but only on a temporary basis.

As you know, Pat is a Director in MOAA’s Auxiliary Department and is on the road most of the time. All of us thank her for the time and effort she put into being our temporary President.

I am very fortunate in having Jane Pall serve as my 1st Vice President. Her work is well-known to all. Pat Shecter will re-assume the position of Secretary, and believe me that is no easy task. For Treasurer, I have an exceptional individual in the person of Major Roy Ludlow, USA, Retired. Roy served as a chaplain in the service and is now our “back-up” chapter chaplain.. And I have a pretty good Personal Affairs Director….myself. I enjoy working with our members on matters of great consequence, in particular those involving the death of a member. Those are the most trying times we will ever go through, and I want you to know that I will stand by you at those times and bring all the knowledge, care and compassion I can to easing your pain and suffering. Pat Shecter declared this the Year of the Member. I endorse that program, and along with the Board we will reach out and touch every member in the chapter. What you want MOAA to be is what it will be. You have the power of membership behind you.

John Devine

Correction to the October Territorial – There will be a lunch meeting on Nov 17, 2010, at the Tucson Country Club in conjunction with the ESGR to recognize Tucson employers who support their Guard and Reserve employees while they are away from home. We hope you can all make it

Think Christmas

In two months Christmas will be over for another year. Before it gets away from us, we ask that you help us give children from Davis-Monthan, who have a deployed parent(s), a really great Christmas.

It is easy to do. Purchase a toy between now and the December meeting. It doesn’t have to be expensive…$15 to $25… and bring it unwrapped to the December 15th meeting at the Tucson Country Club. Don’t like to shop? We’ll take care of it for you. Just send a check made payable to MOAA Tucson (marked TOYS) to me at the address below. We’ll shop for you.

We are blessed to have so much. Please share those blessings with a child who will be missing mom or dad while they are away protecting our freedoms. Thanks for your support.

Shirley Phillips, Auxilliary Representative

7541 E Pima St
